Interview with Maya Yoga owners Kathleen Kastner-Mortenson and Wade Mortenson
Introduction to Ashtanga:
This class will teach the fundamentals of ashtanga yoga, to prepare the student for the regular ashtanga and vinyasa classes.
Ashtanga Primary Series:
This
class refers to the full primary series of the ashtanga system, as
taught in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. This
flowing sequence of postures utilizes ujjayi breath and bandhas (energy
locks) to increases muscular strength, flexibility and concentration.
Mysore Ashtanga:
Mysore is a city in the south of India
(see map)
where Ashtanga yoga has been taught by
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois
since the 1930's. Students practice the Ashtanga series of their choice at their own pace,
with individual instruction and adjustments. Intro to Ashtanga class suggested prior to
beginning the Mysore classes.
Vinyasa Yoga:
Vinyasa
classes use the flowing vinyasa movement of ashtanga yoga, but use a
VARIETY of postures (instead of a set series of postures like Ashtanga
yoga) to cultivate balance, flexibility, strength and endurance.
Introduction to Vinyasa:
This fun, engaging class set to upbeat music teaches the fundamentals
of Vinyasa Yoga including sun salutations, standing poses, balancing
postures, seated and reclining poses, backbends, core isolation and
strengthening. Special emphasis is placed on moving into and out of
postures safely, correct alignment, using the breath, and learning to
quiet the chatter of the mind to find peace and inner stillness. Aimed
primarily at newer students and those with a casual practice, this class
is a great preparation for the regular Vinyasa and Ashtanga classes.
Come along and discover just how good yoga can make you feel!
Vinyasa for Charity (Donation Class):
Set to upbeat music, this fun, engaging, ALL-LEVELS Vinyasa class (suitable for strong
beginners and above), is especially for raising money to help support the work of the Shanti
Bhavan Children's Project (www.shantibhavanonline.org).
Located in India, Shanti Bhavan is an exceptional school and home for the most vulnerable and
disadvantaged children of India's lowest caste, the so-called "untouchables" or dalits. The
children come from families that have been denied basic human rights for centuries. Victims
of extreme social discrimination, they are deprived of the opportunity to receive proper
schooling which would support them continuing with higher education. Shanti Bhavan enables its
children to aspire to careers of their choice - engineering, law, medicine, education, the
arts - through world class education and globally shared values. Once educated and sucessful,
the children will help their families and friends break out of he vicious cycle of economic
destitution and become successful and productive members of society. As Abraham George,
the founder of Shanti Bhavan has noted, "If 1 child is successful, he or she will carry a
1000 more forward." Donation by cash or check only. (Maya class packages and membership
programs cannot be used towards the donation). 100% of your donation will go towards
directly supporting the children of Shanti Bhavan.
