Ashtanga Saved Me
by Paul B.

After a 20+ military career as a Chinook helicopter pilot with four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, my body was tired, broken, and hurt. My mind was full of stress and trauma. I was broken physically and spiritually, and heading for neck surgery. My doctors encouraged me to try yoga to attempt to delay neck surgery back in 2014. I started with gentle and restorative yoga which helped my flexibility, then I moved up to vinyasa yoga, then when I moved back to Kansas City in 2017, I tried Ashtanga on a friend’s recommendation. After one session of Ashtanga, I knew this style and sequence of yoga postures was different and would change everything. I signed up for the Maya Beginners’ Series 6-week class, and I loved the formal structure and the sequence of Ashtanga series but most of all the Maya studio has a certain energy about it, especially with its yoga instructors. These yoga instructors are the absolute best! This yoga studio is one of the best in the country, I have been across the country and tried many studios, and this is the best!

I regularly attend class with Lainie on Monday’s, and I learn something new spiritually and physically in every class. Twice a month go to the level 1 class where I am always welcome. Ashtanga yoga has increased my flexibility so now I no longer need neck surgery, but most of all, this yoga practice has helped me in mindfulness and psychologically grounding myself. Every class here at Maya gives you physical conditioning and psychological calmness. Yoga saved my life physically, emotionally and spiritually, but this studio is absolutely the best in Kansas City. Thank you, Maya Yoga for changing lives with each yoga class.
