You do not need any prior yoga experience to practice yoga at Maya Yoga. If you are new to yoga, or need a refresher, we offer an Intro level class.
We also offer a Beginner Series. This is a weekly 4-week class that is smaller and will take you through all of the poses (asanas). In this class you will also learn about some of the benefits and history of yoga.
Yes, there is a weekly class schedule that rarely changes. You can read about our different class offering and the days and times that they are offered in our Classes section of the website.
Dress comfortably and keep in mind that the room is warmed. It is best to wear a snug-fitting top because a loose shirt can fall open when you bend forward or do inversions. Comfortable yoga pants or long shorts are good. Don’t wear shorts that are too short because you may be uncomfortable in some of the poses. Bikini tops are not appropriate.
The front door unlocks 30 minutes prior to the start of class and remains unlocked for 45 minutes. If you arrive and the door is locked, enter the posted intercom code and we will unlock the door. The practice room opens 15 minutes prior to class start time. If you are running late, please allow the instructor to begin class on time by signing in on the iPad and waiting to enter the practice room until the Opening Invocation (chant) is finished.
Bring your mat and a hand towel to class. We rent mats and towels for $1 each, if you need one. We also sell high quality Manduka Yoga Mats and Barefoot Mysore Mats. We have all the props you will need like blocks, straps, and blankets in the practice room for your use.

We appreciate recommendations. Tell your friends about Maya Yoga. If they want to attend a class with you, use one of the Recommend a Friend cards. They pay $5 for the class and you will receive a $5 credit on your account.
Mysore-style classes, named for Mysore, India where Sri K. Pattabhi Jois lived, is a self‐paced class allowing students to receive individual instruction while learning the Ashtanga yoga practice. All levels are welcome from new beginners to advanced practitioners looking to deepen their understanding. In the beginning, new students receive more attention. As they become familiar with the practice, they are allowed more independence, getting adjustments and assistance only when needed.
Since a Mysore class is self‐paced, students are not limited to the pace and rhythm of a led class or an instructor. While led classes are a great way to learn about the breath and vinyasa, Mysore‐style is where you follow your own breath to deepen your focus and meditation skills. In a led class, you may just skim over a new or difficult pose, but the Mysore-style class provides a unique opportunity to work one‐on‐one with the teacher to progress and experience the benefits of yoga practice. The Ashtanga system is not complete without incorporating both styles of learning. Typically, Ashtanga is practiced six days a week, with 1‐2 of the classes being led.

We enjoy the energy of being in the Crossroads Arts District, but realize parking can be a challenge. Morning, evening, and weekend classes can readily find street parking. Also, parking in the lot next to the Film Row building is available in the evenings and weekends. Attending day/noon classes during the week may require a few extra minutes to locate a parking spot. Typically, going a block north may help with finding street parking.

There are times you may want to work one-on-one with an instructor. All of our instructors provide private instruction at Maya Yoga. Speak with them prior to or after class, or call the studio (816-283-8985). Fees vary by instructor and duration of the session.
